Different Types

In your search for knowledge, you’ve probably noticed that the world is full of different types of garage doors, and not just the traditional up and over canopies that swing outward and slightly protrude or the retractable up and over which slides fully into the garage on horizontal tracks. There are sectional garage doors, roller garage doors, side hinged garage doors, bifold garage doors, and side sliding garage doors. It can feel a little overwhelming – but don’t worry. Selecting according to need can actually weed out a lot of products that inevitably won’t work for you. Here’s a helpful tip: Look for expert-approved products to help you zero in on the type that’s best for you.

What About Security?

The garage door is the forgotten guardian – often underestimated and overlooked as a home protector. Yet, as the biggest entry point to your home it is a vulnerable access route if not properly secured. Reinforced steel or solid-core wooden garage doors with high-quality locks, ideally deadbolts or smart locks will make it harder to force access. In top-tier doors, look for Secured by Design accreditation, which meets police-approved security for top-level protection.

How Safe Are They?

Safety characteristics differ across garage door types based on the quality of their mechanics. Some of the safest have enclosed torsion springs and anti-drop mechanisms that prevent uncontrolled movements – the best of the best integrating spring-in-spring systems that make double sure that the door doesn’t come crashing down if one unlikely snaps. In sectional doors, panel joints can include finger-pinch protection, reducing the risk of trapping during operation. These and other types, such as roller doors, preferably include obstruction-detection systems which halt the door if an object or person is detected underneath. These can vary significantly in effectiveness. The safest are photelectric or are pressure sensitive on touch. The least responsive relies on motor resistance alone to trigger reversal when an obstacle is hit. Top quality doors also have auto-locking mechanisms. Side-hinged doors, by token of being manual, eliminate risks associated with movement, though they can be automated along with obstacle detection sensors. Often, many of these features are worryingly absent in the lowest-budget doors. BS EN 13241-1 certification is mandatory for ensuring safe and compliant operation.

How Energy Efficient Are They?

Higher-quality garage doors provide better insulation, maximising energy efficiency and minimising heat loss. It’s best to steer towards garage doors with proper seals, thick insulation or thermal breaks integrated into their design. That said certain garage doors are more prone than others to thermal escape. If retaining heat is your priority, consider choosing an insulated sectional or side-hinged garage door, as these typically offer far better thermal performance than a roller door. Choose garage doors with U-values below 1 W/m²K to minimise heat loss, especially if you plan to use the space as living quarters. Though higher values still serve a purpose for storage, parking, or workshops. Having this flexibility will allow homeowners to manage heat retention based on insulation needs. Depending on the type of door you choose, look out for double-skinned steel or aluminium panels, total perimeter weather-resistant seals, or thick side brush seals (ones which look like they can block drafts rather than being wispy thin) –  useful if your garage is adjacent to, a living or working space.

What Colours Are Available?

Garage Doors are available in various colours to complement different architectural styles and personal preferences, including RAL standardised and custom colour finishes. Here’s a selection to consider:

  • Classic shades like RAL 9016 (Traffic White), RAL 9005 (Jet Black), and RAL 7016 (Anthracite Grey) offer timeless appeal.
  • Earthy tones such as RAL 8003 (Clay Brown) and RAL 1019 (Grey Beige) blend with natural surroundings and complement masonry structures.
  • Bold colours like RAL 3003 (Ruby Red), RAL 5010 (Gentian Blue) or RAL 6021 (Pale Green) make a statement, adding individual character to the exterior.
  • Metallic finishes provide a modern touch, capturing high-end refinement.
  • Embossed laminates mimic natural timber creating aesthetic charm.

Colours affect how hot garage doors get and how long they stay vibrant without fading. To completely protect the surface, choose options that are UV resistant, use high-quality pigments or have protective coatings. If your garage entrance is south facing bear in mind that light-coloured garage doors minimise heat build-up more than heat absorbing dark colours. It is also worth noting that the appearance may vary depending on the material. The same RAL colour may look slightly different on steel, aluminium, or composite due to surface texture and material reflectivity.

What Sizes Are Available?

Garage doors come in a variety of standard and bespoke sizes, each designed to meet different structural and aesthetic requirements.

A common single garage door dimension is 7ft (2.13m) by 7ft (2.13m). A typical double garage door opening is 14ft (4.26m) by 7ft (2.13m).

Fresh Ideas For A Stunning Finish

A garage door isn’t just functional – it’s one of the first things people see when they approach your home. With a wide range of finishes, you can find a door that matches your home’s architecture and your personal style. Think about coordinating your garage door with your front door, window frames, fascia, or the structural elements of the garage for a co-ordinated look. Furthermore, the surface finish that is applied to a garage door can help with scratch resistance, UV protection, and corrosion resistance. Additionally, high quality products that have innovative features like the Durabelt’ system can also help protect the door’s surface. These small but effective details contribute significantly to the door’s durability and long-term performance.

Here’s a list of typical garage door finishes:

  • Painted – Wide variety to match home exterior.
  • Powder-Coated – Durable and resistant to chipping, fading, and corrosion.
  • Natural Wood – Untreated or with factory stain.
  • Wood Grain – UV-resistant plastic film coating applied to steel to replicate authentic timber appearances like Golden Oak, Rosewood, or Dark Oak.
  • Silk – Offers a smooth, silky surface ideal for modern architectural styles.
  • Slate – Emulates the natural texture of slate. Available in RAL colours.
  • Anodised Aluminium Finish – Metallic finish offering corrosion resistance and a contemporary look.
  • Textured Finish – Subtle surface texture (e.g., stucco or embossed panels) for added depth and visual interest.
  • Planar – Combines a smooth surface with a non-reflective matte finish, delivering a soft and elegant look, growing in popularity for modern homes.
  • Glossy Finish – Smooth and shiny, often used for a bold, polished appearance.
  • Other effects – Digitally printed to offer detailed, natural, and colourfast scratch-resistant surface decors, including wood, stone, and metallic effects.
